One Step towards Organic Farming
Bankatiya village is one of the intervention village of Bhoomi Project approximately 15 kms from Khatima. Shivani SHG is one of the three SHGs in the village under the project, Ghuma Devi, the president of the SHG is an active friendly natured women who has taken the responsibility of running the SHG successfully .She works with participatory approach and participates in all the training programmes under the project designed for the group .
Her husband Rajkumar does not interfere directly in her work. He is like any other male who thinks that SHGs are meant for females only. Under Bhoomi project, training on organic farming was organized and it was told to the women members to bring male members also for the training but Rajkumar did not participate in the training. After the completion of the training Ghuma devi told Rajkumar the complete details of the training programme and insisted him to participate in the next training programme. In the next training programmme, Rajkumar not only participated but also made his presence felt as he was completely involved throughout the training. It was the persuasion of Ghuma devi or the self actualization of Rajkumar that he not only started doing organic farming but also initiated the formation of CBO. Rajkumar prepared wormi compost pit in his house and told the benefits of it to the whole village. The first manure which came out of the pit, he poured it in his 2 bigas of ladyfinger cultivation and through organic pesticide he produced organic lady finger, the production was up to his expectation. This first successful attempt increased his motivational level to an extent that he prepared three more pits taking the total tally to 11 pits in the village.
Rajkumar is now working as a trainer to promote organic farming in Bankatia Village. Seeing his dedication, commitment and hard work he was sent to organic farming field exposure visit, now he has returned and is working with double enthusiasm to promote sustainable Agriculture.
