It’s Time We Blow the Conch

Conches defy the laws of nature; devotees believe conches were given to us to destroy all evil

I do not disagree to the fact that women are biologically a little weaker when compared to their male counterparts. But when we discuss women of the Indian society, why does this fact make us raise questions? The certitude that I have written a write-up on the safety of women well recognizes the issue that the daughters of this nation are not safe.

Lucknow- the city of culture, tradition and history, oh dear where doth thy glory disappear when we spake of thy sultana!

I’ve spent around nine years of my life in this city; considering my age, obviously the city saw me growing up as a teenager. I was twelve when one of my girlfriends told me about her being molested by the school bus conductor. I then barely had an idea about what the conductor wished to do when he would touch the lower parts of her body; I wondered what he looked for in between her legs? That’s when she told me that her mother asked her to stay shut till they managed for some other conveyance.

I never told my mother about one similar incident I faced while travelling with family in a roadways bus a few years after the above incident. That was because at a very tender age I was unveiled to the fact that silence was the key to survival in the society. I would rather avoid the mere glance of the roving gaze than to spiel about it and get locked up inside my abode. Incidents like this did not only happen to me but to a greater part of the ‘women community’.

Rapes, assaults, molestation have now become a part of us. Traversing the reason is challenging, is it patriarchy or misogyny?  How do you make a city safe? What can the system do? My dear you are walking the wrong path, the system doesn’t make or break safety, we do! It’s time we do what the deities did, it’s time we blow the conch and let the world know what we have faced and the fact that we do not deserve to suffer more, raise your voice towards evil and help “Make India Saksham”
